If you need a new ball for you fly press, we can normally supply them.

We can certainly supply balls for  the Norton range, and these balls usually will fit other makes,such as S&B , Edwards, Norton etc. The Denbigh range needs a different type of ball as it has an octogon tapered spike.

{see pictures and notes below}

Denbigh spike

Picture

This photo shows the Denbigh design spike on which the ball rests. As far as we know, of all the UK manufactures of fly presses, only Denbigh used this type of spike, The other manufacturers probably avoided the design because its more expensive to manufacture, and has no real advantage over the traditional square section spike.
Generally for Denbigh fly presses #4 and above, you need to order our large Ball.
Any press lower than a #4 will need our medium Ball.

Denbigh Ball on arm

Here we can see our large ball sitting on the spike of the arm of a #5 Denbigh press. Note if you look at the centre of the ball, you can see the square section tapered hole for the traditional spike.

Traditional square section spike

Picture

The tapered square spike is on about 90 % of UK manufactured used fly presses. It varies slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, but normally you can interchange Balls from one manufacturer to another. They may not on sit perfectly but that’s not a big issue. Some sit high on the spike, and some sit low, some have play in them between spike and the balls bore and rattle in action. Its not important, as long as they don’t fly off in use.

Ball on traditional square spike

Picture

In this snap we see our large ball resting on a tradition spike. A close look at the ball you can see the exit bore of the octagonal section bore there for use with a Denbigh spike.

Occasionally the square spike is extra thick and even our large Ball sits to high, you can over come this by putting the octagonal bore over the square spike. This will result in some play between the bore and spike, but this can be removed by packing the clearance {if you feel you want to eliminate the rattle} with cardboard, wood or rubber.
